Sweet 16 photoshoot locations in NY

Turning 16 is a big deal; you deserve photos that match the moment. Whether you're looking for a scenic outdoor spot, a city backdrop that screams leading character energy, or something totally unique, the right location makes all the difference.

I’ve photographed in so many spots across NYC that picking a favorite feels impossible (seriously, this city is overflowing with amazing backdrops). So, instead of trying to choose just one, I put together this list to help you find the perfect place for your Sweet Sixteen photo shoot. Your “Princess Vives” can be captured with the elegance of Central Park, the neon buzz of Times Square, or a secret garden in Yonkers; these locations will make your photos next-level.

At the end of the day, your Sweet 16 photos should feel like you. Want something bold and dramatic? New York has the spot. Prefer a more relaxed, natural vibe? New York has the spot that works. There’s no right or wrong here; you just need to find the spot that fits your style. So, let’s dive in and find the perfect place to capture this moment just as you want. Let’s start with Brooklyn

BROOKLYN

If you’re thinking about doing a photoshoot in Brooklyn, you’re in luck. The borough has a little bit of everything—iconic landmarks, cool street art, and that laid-back, urban charm that’s hard to find anywhere else. Brooklyn has a vibe that really stands out. From the Brooklyn Bridge to DUMBO’s scenic streets and Williamsburg’s cool, industrial feel, you can find so many spots that’ll give your photos that perfect NYC touch without even leaving the borough.

DUMBO (Brooklyn)

One of the good things about choosing your photoshoot in DUMBO is that we can hit 3-4 spots with different vives in a quick tour like photoshoot: We’ll kick things off at Jefferson Ave for a killer view of the Manhattan Bridge.

Then we’ll stroll over to Pebble Beach for some laid-back, scenic shots by the water. And here’s the best part—just behind Jane’s Carousel, you get an awesome view of the Brooklyn Bridge, so we can grab that iconic shot without actually being on the bridge itself. It’s a great way to capture the vibe of DUMBO with a mix of stunning city views, cool waterfront spots, and classic NYC landmarks. Trust me, it's a fun ride from start to finish! And if you didn’t know, I am the best at taking pictures at this location, so don’t wait any longer, learn how to book a session. :)

1. Jane’s CAROUSEL

Brook posing in front of Jane's carousel in Brooklyn NY

I’ve got to say, Jane’s Carousel is one of my favorite spots in Brooklyn. The location is hard to beat, with views of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Manhattan skyline, and the East River all in one shot.

The carousel itself is a beautifully restored 1922 vintage ride, and it sits inside this modern glass pavilion that brings in plenty of natural light. It’s a nice mix of old and new, and when you stand in just the right spot, you can see the Brooklyn Bridge, the carousel, and the Freedom Tower all in one frame—such a cool slice of New York history.

A quick heads-up: The carousel isn’t open every day, so make sure to check the hours before heading over. Tickets are $3, and you can even keep the ticket as a souvenir, which is a nice touch.

A couple of things to note: It’s closed on Tuesdays, and the last ride is at 6:50pm, so plan accordingly if you want to take photos or videos while riding. Photographers and videographers aren’t allowed to shoot while on the ride itself, but you can still get great shots from outside the glass. There are plenty of good angles around the carousel for some nice photos.

2. Manhattan Bridge

Just like in the postcards! The view of the Manhattan Bridge from Washington Street in DUMBO is straight-up iconic. I can confirm—it’s one of the best backdrops in NYC, with the Empire State Building perfectly framed beneath the bridge. The cobblestone streets add a touch of charm, making the whole scene even more perfect for photos. It’s no surprise this spot is a favorite for photoshoots and those “NYC moment” selfies. It’s naturally photogenic, so no filter is needed (though a little edit can always make it pop).

As you walk toward the waterfront, the bridge comes into full view—it’s breathtaking. The way the sunlight reflects off the steel structure and the contrast between the industrial design and the city skyline create a beautiful backdrop. When I’m shooting here, I love capturing it from every angle—there’s just so much to work with.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an NYC hotspot without the crowds. Tourists, Instagrammers, and influencers in the wild, all battling for that perfect shot. But honestly? Even with the chaos, a little patience, the right lens, and some clever framing will still get you a killer photo.

Totally worth picking it for your photoshoot.

Brooklyn Bridge

The Brooklyn Bridge is such a great spot for a photoshoot. It’s got that perfect mix of iconic architecture and stunning city views, making it ideal for every shoot. The stone arches and cables add so much character to the photos, and the skyline in the background? Classic New York vibes, all the way.

If you’re wondering when to go, I’d say sunrise is the sweet spot. You’ll get that soft, golden light, and it’s way less crowded than later in the day. By mid-morning, it’s packed, and you’ll be dodging tourists and selfie sticks left and right. If you don’t mind a little more hustle and bustle, sunset is pretty epic too when the city lights start to pop.

I’m a big fan of the angles here. Whether you want a wide shot of the whole bridge or a closer shot with those signature cables, it all works. Oh, and the Manhattan side entrance? It’s a great spot for framing some really dramatic shots with the arches.

Even with the crowds, there’s just something about the Brooklyn Bridge that gives every photo this timeless feel. It’s definitely worth the visit—just be ready to work around the hustle and enjoy the view while you’re at it. I mean, it’s New York, after all.

The Bushwick Collective

So, you’re planning a Sweet 16 photoshoot and want something different. Not the usual park setting, not the same skyline shots that everyone else has. The Bushwick Collective is the kind of place that just oozes creativity.

It’s an outdoor art gallery, but not in a fancy museum way, more like an explosion of color stretching across blocks of Brooklyn. Every wall is covered in massive, insanely detailed murals that change all the time, making every photoshoot unique. It’s got that effortless cool factor, like you just happened to land in the most photogenic street in the city.

The best way to do a shoot here is to just explore. Walk around, stop when something catches your eye, take in the energy of the place. No permits, no fees, just stunning backdrops everywhere you turn. There are plenty of great cafés and food spots nearby too, so making a whole day out of it is easy.

Bold colors, big energy, and a shoot that feels fresh and fun. The Bushwick Collective is the spot. Reserve your spot here.

The Peristyle (Prospect Park-Brooklyn)

When it comes to Sweet 16 photoshoots in Brooklyn, Prospect Park is a perfect spot. First, it’s huge. We’re talking 585 acres of meadows, woodlands, and winding waterways right in the heart of Brooklyn. It's super easy to get to by bus, train, or car, which is a win for everyone. Plus, it’s one of those places that feels like a little escape from the city.

One of the coolest things about shooting here is how many different backdrops you get in just one park. There’s Brooklyn’s only lake, tree-lined paths, open fields—it’s all here. And if you want something with a little more wow factor, there’s the Peristyle, also known as the Grecian Shelter. This neoclassical gem, designed in 1905 by Stanford White (basically an architectural legend), looks like something straight out of ancient Greece, with towering stone pillars that make for a seriously stunning setting.

And the best part? No need to stress about permits—regular photography sessions in Prospect Park don’t require one. So, if you’re looking for a spot with variety, history, and a touch of nature, this might just be the perfect place for your Sweet 16 photoshoot.

Central Park

There are so many killer spots for a photoshoot in Central Park. If you're thinking about the best places to take photos in NYC, Central Park is probably high on your list. But with 843 acres of pure beauty, where do you even start?

I will break down three of the best photo spots in Central Park, so the only thing you need to worry about is what to wear.

I’ve done tons of Sweet 16 shoots here, and let me tell you, the girls love it. Honestly, I get it, there are endless beautiful backdrops, and you don’t have to try too hard to get an amazing shot.

Central Park (Bethesda Terrace)

Bethesda Terrace is one of the popular spots in Central Park for a Sweet 16 photoshoot. The stonework and arches create a stunning backdrop that adds depth and character to every shot. It’s the kind of place with beautiful carvings, big arches, and a view that feels like something out of a storybook. Down below, you’ve got the famous Bethesda Fountain with the Angel of the Waters sculpture, surrounded by lush greenery. Although the fountains only work from spring to fall, you are out of luck if your photoshoot is in winter. The view of the lake and the mall above is perfect for some seriously amazing shots.

Bethesda Terrace is home to some of the park’s most iconic architecture, like the Milton tile ceiling from the 1860s, carved sandstone, and painted murals that line the Arcade. The terrace itself, one of the first structures built in Central Park, started construction in 1859 and was finished in 1863, giving it that charming, old-world European vibe. It’s a peaceful spot with great views of both the lake and the city.

The vibe here is elegant yet super relaxed, with tons of cool places to pose. Whether you're standing in front of the fountain or framed by those big arches, it’s the perfect spot for that classic New York feel. Trust me, you’ll end up with some gorgeous photos!

The lighting here is spot-on, too—soft and even under the terrace, warm and natural on the upper level. Plus, the fountain and lake add that classic NYC touch, while the balcony gives you a fantastic wide-angle view. It’s seriously the perfect place to celebrate your Sweet 16 photoshoot.

Central Park (Belvedere)

Belvedere Castle in Central Park is a solid choice for your Sweet 16 photoshoot. Sitting on top of a huge boulder, this small but impressive structure has some of the best views in the park. The grand staircase is great for a classic, elegant shot (if you can time it right to avoid the crowds), while the stone archways and tucked-away corners add a cool feel. The main patio, with the turret in the background, makes for a standout photo, and if you want a full view of the castle itself, the best spot is actually across Turtle Pond—there’s a perfect little outcrop with no fences to get in the way. The terrace near Shakespeare Garden offers panoramic views of the Great Lawn and the city beyond, and while you can’t shoot inside, heading up after your session lets your photographer capture some incredible shots from below. If the weather doesn’t cooperate, the covered terrace gives you a little shelter while still keeping the look of your photos interesting. It’s a small but well-designed space, surrounded by trees and water, giving it just enough privacy while still being right in the middle of the city. If you want a mix of history, great architecture, and amazing views, this is definitely a spot to consider.

Central Park (Bow Bridge)

Bow Bridge — if you’ve ever wandered through Central Park, chances are you’ve snapped a photo there or at least walked across it without realizing you were on one of the park’s most photographed spots. It’s got those classic views: on one side, the fancy old apartment buildings of Central Park West, and on the other, rowboats floating around the Lake with the skyline of Central Park South in the distance. Honestly, whether you’re standing on the bridge or using it as the backdrop, it’s the kind of place that makes every photo look like a scene from a movie.

That said, if you’re thinking about a Sweet 16 photoshoot here, it’s good to know this isn’t exactly a hidden corner of the park. Bow Bridge draws a crowd — tourists, joggers, people doing their own photoshoots — so if you’re camera-shy or don’t love being the center of attention, it might feel a little exposed. But here’s the thing: once you’re in the middle of the shoot, laughing, posing, and doing your thing, the rest of the world kind of fades away. And honestly, with views like that, it’s hard to care who’s watching.

Fort Tryon Park (Manhattan)

Fort Tryon Park is one of those places that just feels different the moment you step in. Tucked away at the top of Manhattan, it’s got winding paths, river views, and just the right mix of nature and old-school architecture. Kind of like Central Park’s artsy, more laid-back cousin.

This spot is seriously underrated, which makes it perfect for a Sweet 16 shoot that isn’t the same as everyone else’s. The Heather Garden? A total color explosion in the spring, with tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths everywhere. It’s also the most crowded part of the park, so deep breaths, patience, and maybe a snack break in between shots.

Next up is Billings Terrace. The side stairway leading up to it barely gets used, which is wild because it’s one of the best spots in the park. It’s got this tucked-away feel, and the mezzanine level is perfect for wide, dramatic shots. If you stick around until the evening, the lampposts light up and add that extra glow.

The Billings Arcade is the main event. It’s a popular spot, so having your shots planned out makes it easier to get in, grab the moment, and move on before another group shows up with the same idea.

Then there’s Linden Terrace, which has hands-down the best Hudson River views in the park. In the southeast corner, there’s a hidden little spot where the George Washington Bridge quietly makes its way into the background.

The session could wrap up outside the Cloisters, where the guards don’t really care what you’re up to as long as you stay away from the entrance. It’s a quiet, open space, perfect for some final shots—or, if we’re being honest, a snack break. Doughnuts on the lawn? Absolutely. I have even took some Titanic-inspired photos in front of the tower because, why not?

Only small annoyance? There’s a random wire fence blocking part of the view near the Cloisters Lawn. But if that’s the biggest issue, Fort Tryon is still one of the best places for a Sweet 16 shoot that feels relaxed, and effortless.

Boscobel House and Gardens ($300 reservations)

Boscobel is one of those places that just feels right. The views over the Hudson are stunning, the historic house adds a touch of elegance, and the whole place has this calm, open atmosphere that makes it easy to relax and enjoy the moment. It’s a perfect mix of classic beauty and natural charm, which makes it an ideal spot for a Sweet 16 photoshoot.

It is a place that never disappoints. The lighting is always flattering, and there’s no shortage of backdrops. Whether it’s the grand mansion, the open fields, or the quiet garden paths, every spot works effortlessly.

The front lawn stands out with its sweeping view of the Hudson River, the marsh below, and the occasional train passing in the distance. It adds a cinematic feel to wide shots, while the unique metal sculptures bring an artistic touch to portraits. The small herb garden, along with the apple and pear trees, adds just the right amount of natural charm.

Boscobel has a peaceful, welcoming feel that makes every photoshoot feel easy and natural. It’s a beautiful, timeless setting that fits any style, from elegant to relaxed. Shooting here is always a great experience.

Untermyer Park and Gardens  Yonkers (reservations $400)

As a Sweet 16 photographer, I’m always looking for locations that bring out the best in my clients, and Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers is easily one of the most breathtaking spots in the area. The beautifully maintained landscapes, stunning fountains, and elegant architecture create a picture-perfect backdrop for any session.

Parking can be a bit tricky. While there is a parking lot, it’s small and fills up quickly. Luckily, street parking is usually available nearby, so plan accordingly. If you’re planning a professional photoshoot, you’ll need a permit. Make sure to check their website and apply in advance at Town Hall.

Some of the best spots for a Sweet 16 photoshoot include the Walled Garden, which is one of the most versatile locations, with a lush Indo-Persian garden surrounded by beautiful stone walls. Every corner is an opportunity for a stunning portrait. The Temple of Love is a small stone temple perched above a waterfall with an incredible view of the Hudson River. It’s absolutely dreamy and feels like something straight out of a fairytale. The Vista offers a scenic mix of trees with a breathtaking river view, perfect for elegant and timeless shots. The Sundial Garden features a floral sundial, adding a unique and vibrant touch to any photoshoot. The Color Gardens and Gatehouse provide a more natural, untamed feel with plenty of greenery and rustic charm.

Untermyer Gardens offers year-round beauty. Spring is perfect for cherry blossoms, summer brings lush greens, fall adds warm, golden tones, and winter offers a festive glow with their Holiday Illumination. No matter the season, there’s always something special to capture.

This hidden gem feels like a slice of Europe right in Yonkers, with architecture inspired by Persian and European gardens. It’s a fantastic location for creating stunning, timeless memories. If you’re planning a Sweet 16 session here, arrive early to beat the crowds, bring comfortable shoes for walking between spots, and take advantage of the golden hour for the best lighting.

If you like elegance, history, and natural beauty, Untermyer Gardens is one of the best choices for a Sweet 16 photoshoot. I highly recommend it!

Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park  (Here, you don't have to make reservations; the fee is 100, and it can be paid at the door)

Sweet 16 photos at Planting Fields in Long Island have everything you need—beautiful gardens, a historic mansion, and plenty of space to mix different looks. No matter the season, this place always delivers great photos.

One of the highlights is Coe Hall, a Tudor-style mansion with classic architecture that gives your photos a stylish and timeless feel. The details on the building, from the stone walls to the wooden doors, add a little extra character without trying too hard. It’s a great spot if you want something elegant but not overly fancy.

Then there are the gardens—probably the best part of Planting Fields. With a mix of colorful flowers, shaded pathways, and open green spaces, you can get a variety of backgrounds in one place. Whether you prefer bright and vibrant shots or something more simple and natural, there’s plenty to work with. The wide lawns and big trees also make for great candid shots, perfect for a relaxed and fun vibe.

The park changes with the seasons, which makes it a great option year-round. Spring and summer bring out all the flowers and greenery, fall gives you warm tones and cool textures, and winter has a clean, simple look that works well for more neutral or moody shots.

For something a little different, the greenhouses at Planting Fields are worth checking out. They have unique plants and interesting backdrops that add some variety to your photos. Plus, they’re a good backup in case the weather isn’t great.

Practical things to keep in mind—there’s a parking fee from May to Labor Day, but the park itself is well-maintained, easy to walk around, and has benches if you need a break.

If you want a location that’s simple, natural, and full of great spots for photos, Planting Fields is a solid choice. It gives you a mix of classic and modern looks, making it easy to get photos that feel like you.

Sands Point Preserve Conservancy

When I first saw Hempstead House and Castle Gould at Sands Point Preserve, it felt like stepping back in time. Both buildings have this timeless, old-world feel with their stone walls and classic style. Castle Gould is the larger one — about 100,000 square feet — and it was inspired by Kilkenny Castle in Ireland. The stonework, cast-iron details, and little touches give it a really cool historic vibe. They really do look like castles, and it’s easy to imagine what life might’ve been like back then.

Hempstead House is just as impressive, especially surrounded by its manicured gardens. In the warmer months, the Rose Garden and terrace overlooking the Long Island Sound are absolutely picture-perfect. I did a Sweet 16 photoshoot there, with the Sound in the background and the sun setting behind it. You can also walk to a small beach on the property, which makes the whole experience even better. It’s a quiet spot with a lovely view of the water, perfect for a break or a few more photos.

Everywhere you walk, there’s something beautiful to look at. The buildings are big and grand, but they don’t feel cold or uninviting. Between the gardens, the ocean view, and the architecture, it’s a place that’s definitely worth visiting — whether you're there for photos, a walk, or just to explore.

You will need to get a permit to shoot at these locations, their fees are 350 for shooting outside or 450 to use inside the buildings.
